Abstract Expressionism

Abstract Expressionism begun during the 1940's in New York. The movement is similar to it predecessor Surrealism as the movement focused on spontaneous and subconscious movements and is know for its bright colours, gestural drawings and primitive and impulsive movements. The movement is mainly associated with painters such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko etc. Abstract expressionism can be split in to two types,  action with artists such as Pollock using spontaneous and unconventional methods to paint with their action based movements. And the colour field side of the movement where artists like Rothko using large areas of colour to create tension.
